The Mustang GT is the most-booked performance car we have, and the reason is not complicated: it delivers most of the drama of a supercar at a fraction of the price, and it is the easiest one to live with.
The 5.0-litre Ti-VCT V8 is naturally aspirated, which matters. There is no turbo muffling the noise — it builds cleanly to the redline, and the sound through the KLCC tunnels is the thing guests message us about afterwards. 0–100 km/h in 4.2 seconds is quick enough that nobody feels short-changed.
Why it suits first-timers. Four seats, a boot that takes a weekend's luggage for two, and ride height that copes with speed bumps and ramps without a nose lift or a second thought. If you have never rented a performance car before, this is the one to start with — it is fast and loud without demanding the concentration a mid-engined car does.
Birthdays, proposals and shoots. Along with the Huracán, this is our most common booking for a milestone. It photographs well, the convertible variant is available if you want the roof down, and the price makes a full-day booking realistic rather than a stretch.
Honest limitations. It is a heavy car with a live-axle heritage and it does not corner like a 911 — that is not what it is for. The interior is plainer than anything else on this list. If precision is what you want, take the Porsche.
Terms. Lower deposit than the supercars, standard driver requirements, comprehensive insurance included, free delivery across Kuala Lumpur.
